Richard Gibbs

Professor and Director
Baylor College of Medicine
Richard Gibbs founded the Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC) at Baylor College of Medicine in 1996 to ‘Advance medical care through research and translation of genomics’.
The HGSC was one of the five sites selected to complete the Human Genome Project and subsequently collaborated to sequence the genomes of many key species. The group pioneered DNA capture and diagnostic whole genome sequencing for genetic diagnosis, to guide effective disease treatments.
Currently the HGSC is researching the biology of rare and common genetic disease, with a new focus on the role of somatic variation in both normal development and disease.
