Dr. James Crawford is professor and chair emeritus of the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at Northwell Health. Dr. Crawford received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Duke University School of Medicine, and his post-graduate training in anatomic pathology and gastrointestinal pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, followed by a fellowship in hepatic pathology at the Royal Free Hospital in London. Dr. Crawford formerly served as faculty and staff pathologist at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and at the Yale University School of Medicine. Immediately prior to his current position, he was a professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Florida, College of Medicine in Gainesville. Over the past 15 years as department chair and as Senior Vice President for Laboratory Services, he provided leadership of laboratory services at Northwell Health, a major non-profit health system serving the greater New York metropolitan area. He is a strong advocate for the importance of in-system clinical laboratories for integrated health systems, and is a leading proponent of the role of pathology and the clinical laboratory in patient-centered care and value-based care. As a founding member of the Project Santa Fe Foundation and Chair of the Board of Directors, he is a leader in the effort to develop the value statements for laboratory diagnostic services in the next era of health care. He is founding Editor-in-Chief of Academic Pathology, the official journal of the Association of Pathology Chairs (APC). An internationally renowned liver pathologist, he has authored over 300 peer review papers, critical reviews, and book chapters, and is senior editor of three books. He is the 2021 recipient of the APC Distinguished Service Award.
