Transitioning to a 100 Percent Digital Pathology Workflow

By Bob Croce

For The Executive War College

Held over after a smash hit 2023, a full-day discussion is back that will help you work toward breaking those glass slides. That’s right, the 2024 Executive War College will unfold with an updated rerun of its most-popular Day 3 workshop from last year.

The session, which sold out in 2023, is titled, “Breaking Pathology’s Glass Slide Updated: Ways to Build Revenue with Digital Pathology, New Slide Scanning CPT Codes, and More,” and already signed up as a speaker is Eric Glassy MD, Medical Director of Affiliated Pathologists Medical Group in Rancho Dominquez, CA. Dr. Glassy is a nationally recognized expert in transitioning organizations to 100% digital pathology and whole slide imaging (WSI), having pioneered the technology more than a dozen years ago at Pathology, Inc.

An early adopter of digital pathology and WSI, Glassy told The Dark Report that, “Over the years, we tried different ways to present our tumor cases. This ranged from presenting glass slides and showing 35 mm slides with a projector, to running a video feed and using digital still images. Hands down, use of whole slide images has proven the most effective.”

Pathology labs now working with WSIs and digital pathology workflow continue to report comparable accuracy when compared to working with glass slides. There are multiple benefits, including the ability to digitally direct cases to subspecialist pathologists, and the ease of accepting referral cases.

“There is always a favorable reaction from the clinicians and surgeons who view these whole slide images,” Glassy told The Dark Report. “It also raised the profile and contribution of our pathologists who present these cases at tumor boards, during consultations, and in other interactions with colleagues.”

An elite lineup of speakers

Glassy, BTW, won’t be the only speaker in this day-long workshop designed to give you advice, best practices and strategies for going 100% DP. Some of the pathology profession’s most-innovative leaders will also be speaking and sharing the successes and setbacks after their pathology labs began scanning glass slides to create WSIs, and their pathologists transitioned to reading cases digitally. It’s real world practice stuff here.

That’s it for this week. More dispatches to come. Hope to see you and your “krewe” in New Orleans.
